Jump Starting Using Jump Leads
It’s important to use proper jump leads with built-in spark protection and to follow the correct connection order. Before starting, make sure both vehicles are compatible. For example, a lot of vehicles use a 12-volt system with negative earthing to the chassis, but confirming this helps avoid damage to the vehicle’s electrical system.
Before you start:
- Ensure both vehicles are turned off.
- Check that the batteries are the same voltage (most passenger vehicles use 12V).
- Position the vehicles close enough for the leads to reach, but ensure they’re not touching.
To jump start safely:
- Ensure both vehicles are turned off.
- Connect the red clamp to the positive terminal of the flat battery (look for the ‘+’ symbol).
- Connect the other red clamp to the positive terminal of the donor battery.
- Connect the black clamp to the donor battery’s negative terminal (look for the ‘-’ symbol).
- Attach the remaining black clamp to an unpainted metal surface on the engine block.
Note: Do not attach the final black clamp directly to the negative terminal of the flat battery, as doing so can create sparks near the battery.
Once you’ve set up the jump cables, start the car with the working battery and let the engine run for a few minutes to charge up the flat battery.
To remove the jumper leads, do the same steps to set up, but in reverse order:
- Remove the black clamp from the engine block of the car with the flat battery.
- Remove the black clamp from the donor battery’s negative terminal.
- Remove the red clamp from the donor’s battery positive terminal.
- Finally, remove the red clamp from the previously flat battery.
